GINEBRA HOPES TO TURN FORTUNES AROUND WITH TURNER

GINEBRA HOPES TO TURN FORTUNES AROUND WITH TURNER
Welcoat picks Keep over Morgan
Thursday, 13 March 2008
The imports roster for the coming Smart PBA Fiesta Cup is almost complete with Barangay Ginebra signing up Rahshon Turner of Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) and Welcoat eventually choosing former San Diego stalwart Jason Beau Keep over Georgia State’s Sylvester Morgan.

With two weeks before the opening of the season-ending tourney, only Magnolia, Purefoods and Red Bull have yet to strike a deal with their respective prospects.

The Giants are looking to enlist 6-foot-10 Darius Rice of Miami while the Barakos may settle with veteran PBA import Jameel Watkins. The Beverage Masters are keeping their choice secret.

Others already signed are Bobby Burries and Jason Dixon of Coca-Cola, Wesley Wilson of Sta. Lucia, Randy Holcomb of Alaska, Aaron McGhee of Talk n Text and Steve Thomas of Air21.

Ginebra coach Jong Uichico thinks he’s got a rock-solid bruiser in Turner, a 6-foot-7 center who has played pro ball in several European leagues.

"He is an experienced player and I do believe he can be of big help in our cause," said Uichico of Turner, who’s expected to arrive Thursday night.

Turner, a 200-pound native of Passaic, New Jersey, played for Gravelines in France last year, making the French All-Star Game. He also had stints in Holland
and Spain.

He suited up with FDU from 1994 to 1998, leading the team to the Northeast Conference (NEC) tournament title and a berth in the US NCAA proper in his senior season.

Meanwhile, Welcoat coach Leo Austria opted to get Keep over Morgan after a thorough analysis of their credentials.

Keep played the final season of his collegiate career at San Diego after a one-year stay at North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and a two-year stint with Oklahoma State. He averaged 18.0 points and 9.1 rebounds with the San Diego Toreros.

The Bend, Oregon native was runner-up to Gonzaga's Blake Stepp for the 2003 West Coast Conference Player of the Year. He earned all-tournament honors at the 2003 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament after averaging 16.3 points on 64.3 shooting percentage (third best in the tourney). (NC)
