National team coach Chot Reyes billed him as the best point guard in the league and he immediately proved that by bagging the Most Valuable Player plum in the 2005 All-Star Game in Laoag City. Prior to that, he was also adjudged the MVP in the 2005 Sultan’s Cup in Brunei where the Nationals took home the crown.
Helterbrand made a grand comeback in the 2004-05 season as he was named the Comeback Player of the Year by the PBA Press Corps since he was instrumental in the two titles of the Kings that year. He did almost exactly the same the following season, production-wise, as he averaged 14.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 42 games.
